Like our
grantees, the Foundation has confronted investment losses and
decisions about how best to target decreased funds for the
greatest impact. Our hope was to provide a steady funding stream
during hard times. Despite the grim economic outlook, in 2008,
382 grants totaling $9,504,969 were distributed to nonprofit
organizations primarily based in Minnesota, Colorado and
California.
The events of this past year also prompted the
Foundation’s board and staff to reaffirm our core mission and
values, refresh our funding priorities, and streamline the
Foundation’s grantmaking processes to be more user-friendly to
grantseekers. To enhance our communications efforts, we adopted
a new brand identity that reflects the spirit of our founders,
Jay and Rose Phillips, and honors the directed giving by the
three branches of the Phillips family in their home communities.
While we face a long road ahead to economic recovery, we are
pleased to share some good news! We invite you to read the
stories of four remarkable grantees featured in this annual
report. Each one has overcome significant barriers and advanced
innovative efforts that help people reach their potential and
lead healthier, more productive lives. Their stories and
accomplishments, along with countless others, continue to
inspire us and reinforce our commitment to help others live
their lives with hope, dignity and purpose.
With sincere
gratitude for all that you do and the opportunity to work
together,
The Jay and Rose Phillips Family Foundation Board of
Trustees
